For most families, finding affordable housing is their greatest challenge. Rising costs force people to make difficult choices between paying the rent, buying food, accessing healthcare, and affording childcare. This instability does more than strain budgets. It hurts mental health, disrupts communities, and makes it hard to invest in the next generation. A promising solution is already working in communities across the country: Community Land Trusts (CLTs).

What is a Community Land Trust?
A CLT is a nonprofit organization that acquires and holds land in trust for the benefit of the community. By separating land ownership from home ownership, CLTs keep housing affordable not just today but for generations to come. Families buy houses at a price they can afford, while the land remains in trust to guarantee long-term stability.
How it Works:
The CLT model uses long-term ground leases, enabling homeowners to build equity and stability while ensuring housing remains affordable for future residents. In this way, CLTs prevent speculation and displacement, keeping families rooted and homes accessible. And the role of the resident is not just that of a tenant, but also a decision-maker. Who it serves: CLTs are designed for individuals with low to moderate incomes who might otherwise be excluded from homeownership. They offer a pathway to stability for families, seniors, and individuals who need housing they can count on.
Why Housing Matters for Health:
Housing is a social determinant of health. Without stable housing, families are more likely to experience food insecurity, untreated health issues, and chronic stress. Poor housing conditions contribute to illnesses like asthma, while frequent moves disrupt children’s development and learning. On the other hand, affordable housing improves long-term health outcomes, reduces healthcare costs, and helps families thrive.
LEAF’s Role:
At LEAF, we know that CLTs often face barriers to financing. That’s why we provide loans and technical assistance tailored to their needs. Our work helps CLTs acquire land, develop housing, and build organizational strength. By supporting these community-led models, we expand access to housing and support organizations that reduce displacement and stabilize neighborhoods.
Angela, a new owner in the Atlanta Land Trust, which LEAF helped fund, says, “The minute I walked into the home, it felt ‘correct’. I was grounded. I have the freedom now to create a space that feels like home for me and my dogs. I love it. Everyone should get to live in the city where they work. Even if I’m not getting all the equity, I’m saving more and have more opportunities to become financially stable in other ways.”
Why Having a Home Matters:
A home is more than shelter—it’s a foundation for security, health, and opportunity. Community Land Trusts ensure that housing remains permanently affordable, protecting families today and into the future. With partners like LEAF, CLTs are helping communities across the U.S. create stronger, healthier, and more inclusive neighborhoods where everyone has the chance to belong and to thrive.
