Chatham Harvesters: A Local Fish Story (Chatham, MA)

The math stopped working for Cape Cod fishermen in Chatham, MA. Global markets lowered prices while costs climbed. Local cod populations crashed, yet restaurants still served cod – 90% imported from Iceland. Tourists craved fresh fish but bought frozen substitutes.

Five fishermen came together to crack this problem by forming Chatham Harvesters, a worker-cooperative that pays fishermen fair prices while connecting consumers directly to local catch.  Today, 25 active fishermen contribute to the co-op.

Here’s how it works: Fishermen sell their daily haul to the co-op at premium rates. The co-op educates consumers about seasonal eating and sustainable fishing. Customers buy fish shares—weekly boxes of whatever boats bring in. More restaurants are buying now too. No middlemen. Fresh fish moving from boat to table.

The results? Fishermen earn more. Consumers eat better. The cooperative now serves 1000 fish share members. The fishing trade stays local instead of being gobbled up by global corporations.

But growing requires capital. Chatham Harvesters won a state grant to expand healthy food access in low-income areas. Problem: grants pay out slowly. The co-op needed cash immediately to buy more fish.

LEAF stepped in with a bridge loan through the Mass Food Trust Program. The co-op was able to follow through on their commitment. The grant money arrived later, repaying the loan.

“Alan from LEAF has been fantastic to work with,” said Brett Tolley, a 4th generation fisherman, and general manager of Chatham Harvesters. “Alan took the time to listen and really understand our cooperative so that he could thoughtfully connect us to the right opportunities to help us grow.”

The cooperative is growing, expanding into restaurants. The Fishermen have more control. Consumers discover the difference between day-boat scallops and frozen substitutes. Cape Cod’s fishing heritage survives another generation.

Simple economics: when local producers control their market, everyone wins. LEAF is proud to be a small fish in this cooperative sea!
