Worker cooperatives thrive in all industries across the United States. Now the cooperative model has expanded into a floating relaxation service, Float On, in Portland, Oregon.
What is Floating?
Floating, is an immersive experience in tanks filled with body-temperature water saturated with Epsom salt. The buoyancy creates a sensation of weightlessness and sensory deprivation.
A Cooperative Transition
For 15 years, Float On has served Portland’s floating community. With LEAF’s funding and support, it has become the nation’s first worker-owned cooperative in the floating industry.
After 13 years, Float On’s founders were ready for a new venture. Instead of selling to outside investors, they met with their seven long-term staff and sold to them to become a worker-cooperative.
Board President and 12-year veteran Marshall Hammond explains: “We’ve always operated with a philosophy that empowered workers in decision-making. Our culture values democratic principles and transparency.”
Since becoming worker-owned, the team has focused on developing business, management and operations skills while embracing full decision-making authority. As Hammond said, “It’s up to us now—we’re in control. Sink or swim (and float).”
The community response has been supportive, with the membership base growing. Clients appreciate that their relaxation destination has remained open 5 days a week while supporting the worker-owners who provide the relaxing floating service.
