Founded in 1994 by Manuel Vicente, Vicente’s Supermarket has grown into a vital part of Brockton, MA and Pawtucket, RI communities, with a fourth store planned for New Bedford in late 2024. This thriving, Cape Verdean immigrant-led business is run by Manuel’s sons, Jason and Brian Barbosa.
Vicente’s growth has been supported by various initiatives and loans, enabling renovations and expansion of their fresh, affordable food offerings*. The store’s product mix reflects the diverse community specializing in Cape Verdean and Haitian foods while accepting SNAP/HIP and WIC so anyone can access it.
With over 140 full-time staff, 95% from nearby areas, Vicente’s prioritizes local job creation and upward mobility. The store even offers round-trip transportation for their customers. They collaborate with the World Farmers cooperative, that sources from local immigrant farmers.
LEAF is proud to provide flexible funding for Vicente’s, supporting their mission to uplift neighborhoods. More than a grocery store, Vicente’s serves as a hub for cultural connection, economic opportunity, and community service.
