What is the Student Cooperative and who is it for?
- Shared living. 32 students near the University of Minnesota campus live out their cooperative principles together. Since 1940, “the Students’ Cooperative has been a place to grow, celebrate, cry, eat, dance, discuss, sleep, and learn – meeting social, economic, and cultural needs together.” (The Student Cooperative Instagram page)
- Affordable. Living in this cooperative community means sharing resources, and fitting student budgets.
- In partnership. LEAF is proud to partner with Shared Capital Cooperative. LEAF provided $650k in financing towards the project, part of a $1.47 MM loan. The North American Student Cooperative Organization (NASCO) is helping them rehab the Student Cooperative. With the pandemic, the co-op fell into economic trouble. This wider cooperative ecosystem LEAF is a part of is helping rehabilitate this historic Student Cooperative.
