In 2021 Massachusetts General Brigham Hospital responded to research on the concept of “food as medicine”. The premise of the research: Addressing at-home nutrition can be an effective way to treat many chronic health conditions. Massachusetts General Brigham put out a request for a local vendor to implement a pilot program delivering boxes of fresh, healthy groceries to r Medicaid-eligible patients. The patients would be referred to the new program by the hospital’s healthcare providers.
Fresh Food Generation applied and won the contract. FFG delivered their healthy, easy-to-prepare groceries to local Medicaid-eligible patients. The pilot program went so well that the hospital renewed its contract with FFG in 2023.
One of LEAF’s core commitments is to make healthy foods more accessible. Providing a loan to Fresh Food Generation to help provide healthy foods to Medicaid patients is a strong fit for LEAF.
Does it surprise any of us to hear that well-prepared nutritious food can be a tool to treat chronic health conditions? Probably not, but it’s nice when the doctor’s orders are this simple: Eat delicious healthy food.
