LEAF Funds the Bay State Banner, Keeping a Legacy Alive (Boston, MA)

Bay State Banner Gives Voice to the Black Community

LEAF is proud to support the Bay State Banner. The Bay State Banner has been a Black-owned newspaper since its founding in 1965. The Bay State Banner has been a leader in news, covering stories that the mainstream news consistently ignored or downright missed. With thoughtful articles on political, economic, and cultural issues of interest in the Black and Latino communities in Boston, Massachusetts, and New England, every week, the paper has enhanced an entire region.

The legendary founder and owner Melvin Miller, recently sold the Banner to veteran media executives Andre Stark and Ronald Mitchell.  It is good news for New England that the Banner is going to remain a local, Black-owned paper while expanding its reach and impact beyond Boston and Massachusetts. With independent high-quality journalism here and growing, we get more engaged citizens, that’s a reason to celebrate

The Banner’s new owners, award-winning Black journalists, are well-connected to the community and bring a commitment to equity. The Bay State Banner will blend its bedrock journalism—stories with an impact on communities of color (often overlooked by mainstream media) with an expansive technological platform.

Blending their skill, and depth of experience with an investment in new digital media, the Bay State Banner is becoming an interactive, multi-media news platform. LEAF is proud to support this valuable leader in breakthrough media in continuing the legacy of a longstanding voice in culture and the social justice movement.
