Lexington Cooperative Market in Buffalo, NY is a thriving force in its community, with more than 11,000 members and $11 million in annual sales. To keep up with demand, they are opening another store financed in part by a loan from LEAF.
The Lexington Co-op has steadily grown to be one of the most successful food co-ops in the country and last year, received the Cooperative Excellence Award from CCMA, the association of coop management. “It’s such a cool thing that this little community business that was started by 30 people in 1971 in the back of the People Art Coffeehouse….has grown to be a $10 million business, and be recognized as one of the best co-ops in the country.”—-General Manager, Tim Bartlett.
The new store will open in Spring 2016, create 65 new jobs, and continue to work with the 124 small farms and 200 local vendors who supply many of the co-op’s products. Watch “Locally Grown,” a documentary made for the 40th Anniversary of the Lexington Co-op.
