Hendersonville Community Food Coop in North Carolina opened its new store in February 2015 with the support of over 2,300 members! This move triples their sales square footage and will also make room for a 50-seat community space for programs around healthy eating, budget shopping and local food issues. The co-op exceeded its $800,000 member fundraising goal by $125,000!
LEAF is proud to have been a lender, along with NCDF (NorthCountry Cooperative Development Fund) on this project, which created 18 new jobs and is located in a “food desert” and a CDFI Investment area, due to its high poverty rate (30%). The co-op is also a leader at the international level, as one of forty-one consumer cooperatives to join the International Labor Forum, the Teamsters Union, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union and organizations like Global Exchange to pressure the Hershey Corporation to end child slave labor at its cocoa farms.
